Mineral supplements out of Seaweeds to help Arthritis
A mineral supplement that is made out of extraction from seaweeds may
help those who re suffering from arthritis, and may help reduce of purchasing over-the-counter painkillers, according to a study in New York.
The research held controlled subjects of 22 adults and are all reported to be suffering with severe knee arthritis. Those subjects who took the mineral supplement in the duration of 12 weeks verbalized that they were able to cut down their use of NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They also reported that they had improved their walking ability and the range of motion, such as flexing, of their knees.
Despite of the reports in their preliminary studies, more researches and controls are needed. But still, according to their online publication, the Nutrition Journal, the supplement made from seaweeds, branded as Aquamin, is successful in reducing arthritic patients’s need for NSAIDs.
The research controlled 22 adults with knee osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative arthritis and degenerative joint disease. It is the degradation of joints, which brings joint pain, tenderness, creaking and locking of joints. Factors that can contribute to the disease include heredity, metabolic abnormalities and mechanical factors.
The first two weeks of the study involved the controlled subjects cutting down in half of their use of NSAIDs to alleviate pain, and then completely stopping the use of the drug for the rest of the research duration.
The findings, however, mentioned that Aquamin “cannot entirely replace” NSAIDs as one of the treatment regimen for arthritis.
I suffer terribly with arthritis in my hands but as soon as I stopped eating red meat it made a huge difference. I still eat fish and I can’t resist bacon (who can!) but I’m sure it is because I’m no longer eating the fats in the meat that has helped me.
My husband has been using the “Dr. Max Powers Joint Support w/ Vitamin B12″ supplements for 4 years now for his arthritis. His Orthopedic Surgeon recommended the Dr. Max Powers brand only and told him to stay away from other similar products because they don’t work as efficiently. His hip needs to be replaced and with the Joint Support Supplements he has gotten so much relief that he has been able to put off the replacement for 10 years…and still counting.
It isn’t a quick fix though. It took about 4 months of using the product before he saw increased mobility and decreased pain. He swears by this product and never misses a dose.
When I spoke to my rheumatologist he thinks everyone over 50 ought to take this supplement — but only this particular brand. Despite recent reports that glucosamine/chondroitin generally may be ineffective, he continues to recommend it because the fed govt (NIH? not sure which agency) did a well-designed study of this actual brand and found it effective.
My understanding is that, while it may sometimes cause new cartilage growth, it is most useful for minimizing future cartilage loss, i.e., it’s primarily effective as a preventative supplement. They were a bit difficult to find in stores, but I was able to find them online at http://www.drmaxpowers.com
